How long should a bathroom remodel take? Contractor says 6 weeks.

We hired a contractor for a full bathroom remodel (tile, vanity, shower, fixtures) and they said 4-6 weeks with the bathroom totally out of commission. We only have two bathrooms. Is 6 weeks normal or should I be concerned about timeline creep?

4-6 weeks is realistic for a full bathroom remodel with one crew. Here's a typical breakdown: demo (2-3 days), plumbing rough-in (2-3 days), electrical (1-2 days), waterproofing + tile (5-7 days with cure times), vanity + fixtures (2-3 days), glass door (1 day, often 2 week lead time), punch list (1-2 days). Build in buffer days for inspections and material deliveries. Ask for a written schedule with milestones.

Ours was quoted at 4 weeks and took 7. Main delay was the tile we picked was backordered 2 weeks (see my tip above about picking everything first). The other delay was the plumber found old galvanized pipes behind the wall that needed replacing. With only 2 bathrooms, I highly recommend setting up a temporary schedule so everyone in the house knows when the other bathroom is available.
