What's a realistic budget for a full master bathroom remodel?

We want to gut our 1990s master bathroom — new tile, vanity, walk-in shower (remove the tub), new fixtures. The bathroom is about 80 sq ft. We're in the Chicago suburbs. I've seen ranges from $15K to $40K online and have no idea what's realistic for a mid-range remodel.

For an 80 sq ft master bath gut remodel in the Chicago suburbs, a mid-range job runs $20K-$28K typically. That gets you good porcelain tile, a solid vanity, frameless glass shower door, and quality fixtures. It goes up fast if you pick natural stone tile, a freestanding tub, or high-end hardware. The biggest variable is labor cost — get 3 quotes minimum. Also budget 10-15% contingency because bathrooms always have surprises behind the walls.

We did exactly this in Naperville last year — gut 85 sq ft master bath, walk-in shower, new everything. Came in at $24K. The tile was the biggest material cost ($4K) and the plumbing rework was the biggest labor cost. Best tip: pick ALL your materials before demo starts. Delays from waiting on backordered tile or fixtures are the #1 reason bathroom remodels go over timeline and budget.
