Heat pump vs. traditional furnace + AC — which is cheaper to run?

We need to replace our 18-year-old furnace and AC. Our HVAC company is pushing a heat pump system but it's $4K more upfront. We're in Nashville where winters are moderate. Does a heat pump actually save money on utility bills compared to a gas furnace + central air?

In Nashville's climate, a heat pump is a great choice. Modern heat pumps are efficient down to about 5°F, and Nashville rarely goes below 20°F. You'll use the heat pump for both heating AND cooling, so you're replacing two systems with one. Expect 30-50% lower heating costs vs. a gas furnace, plus you eliminate the gas bill entirely. The $4K premium typically pays back in 3-5 years through utility savings.

We switched to a heat pump in Knoxville (similar climate). Gas + electric bill went from around $280/month in winter to about $160. Summer cooling costs were about the same. Absolutely worth it for moderate climates. Just make sure they size it correctly — undersized heat pumps are the #1 complaint I see.
