Metal roof vs. asphalt shingles — is the extra cost worth it in Florida?

We're in Tampa and hurricane season is always a concern. Metal roofs seem more durable but the quotes are almost double what shingles cost. For anyone who's made this choice in Florida, was it worth the premium?

In Florida, metal is absolutely worth it if you plan to stay in the home 10+ years. Standing seam metal roofs are rated for 140+ mph winds and last 40-60 years vs. 15-20 for shingles. You'll also see a meaningful insurance discount — many Florida insurers give 15-25% off for metal roofs. The upfront cost difference usually pays for itself between the insurance savings and never having to re-roof.

We went with metal on our Tampa home 3 years ago. $22K vs. about $13K for shingles. Our insurance dropped by $1,400/year and we haven't worried once during hurricane season since. Only downside is rain is louder but honestly we like the sound.
