How long does solar panel installation actually take from signing to power on?

We just signed a contract with a solar company and they said 6-8 weeks. That seems like a long time just to put panels on a roof. What's a realistic timeline and what causes delays?

6-8 weeks is normal and here's why: 1-2 weeks for permitting (city/county), 1 week for utility interconnection paperwork, 1 day for actual installation, then 1-3 weeks waiting for city inspection and utility approval to flip the switch. The actual roof work is the fastest part. Biggest delay is usually the local permitting office.

Ours took 10 weeks in San Diego because the city permit office was backed up. The install crew was there for one day and done by 3pm. Everything else was waiting on paperwork. Ask your company to submit permits ASAP — some drag their feet if they're busy.
